Caring for the smallest patients, from their very first moments.

I'm Ysabella Uy, a newborn nursery nurse at Mission Regional Medical Center, applying to the NICU at Driscoll Children's Hospital Rio Grande Valley. I bring calm, attentive care to babies in their first days of life, and to the families who love them.

My nursing philosophy

Nursing, to me, is more than providing care. It is about offering comfort, reassurance, and strength when people need it most. I take pride in being a calm and compassionate presence, especially in moments that feel overwhelming or uncertain for patients and their families. My experience has shaped me into a nurse who values both clinical excellence and human connection, with a strong focus on safety, empathy, and thoughtful communication. I hope to make every person I care for feel respected, supported, and genuinely seen.

Nursery Nurse

August 2025 – Present

Newborn Nursery · Mission Regional Medical Center

In my role as a nursery nurse, I provide attentive, compassionate care to newborns during their first moments of life, ensuring their safety, comfort, and stability. I perform routine assessments, monitor vital signs, support feeding and thermoregulation, and maintain a clean, secure environment. I also work closely with families, offering education, reassurance, and guidance as they begin caring for their newborn. Through collaboration with the healthcare team, I help ensure smooth transitions of care while prioritizing both clinical excellence and emotional support for each patient and family.

I have also oriented in the NICU and assisted in deliveries and C-sections, standing with the team as newborns take their very first breaths.

Nurse Tech

April – July 2024

Intensive Care Unit · Cardiac Floor · Doctors Hospital at Renaissance

As a nurse technician in a high-acuity ICU setting, I supported critically ill patients by assisting with daily care, monitoring vital signs, and contributing to timely interventions. This experience allowed me to develop strong clinical awareness and adaptability in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. Working alongside experienced ICU nurses, I gained hands-on exposure to advanced care practices while learning the importance of teamwork, communication, and precision. I approached each patient with empathy and attentiveness, helping to provide both physical care and a sense of comfort during critical moments.

Before nursing

Six years of showing up for people on their busiest days

Before the nursery, I spent years in high-volume service work, hosting and serving at restaurants, crafting drinks as a bobarista, and leading community painting workshops for kids and families. Those jobs taught me to stay warm, organized, and unflappable with strangers under pressure. I use those skills at the bedside every single shift.

Why the NICU, and why Driscoll

The work I'm meant to do

The nursery taught me that the first days of life are precious, and that the tiniest patients need nurses with steady hands and soft voices. Since joining Mission Regional, I've oriented in the NICU and assisted in deliveries and C-sections, and every shift has confirmed the same thing: this is the work I'm meant to do.

Driscoll Children's Hospital Rio Grande Valley is bringing dedicated children's care to the community I grew up in, trained in, and work in today. I would be honored to grow as a NICU nurse in a hospital where the Valley's smallest patients are the entire mission.
